Introduction
We ask the question, 'Why is it that so many believers have a tremendous
hunger to see their friends and neighbors come to Christ, but never seem to
actually lead someone to the Lord?" This is the situation worldwide; it is
nothing new. There must be an answer, since people do come to the Lord, and
there are people out there doing a lot of it.
We asked a friend who works with us who has had many years of experience,
to tell us how he learned and what he learned and how it all worked out.
Here is what he told us here at "Soul-Winning Made Easy."
When my wife and I came to know the Lord in 1954 we felt we had walked
into a whole new world that we never knew existed. We were religious people,
taught Sunday School and had a Junior Hi youth group in a standard church
we'd grown up in. Now we had something of substance to share with the kids
we are working with, and others as well. So how do we start.
For some time we flubbed along, but our best efforts were taking the kids
to places where there were mature Christians who knew what they were doing.
The kids came to the Lord and we learned as we watched and listened. I had
been in sales all my life, since I was a 10 year old, so how do we make the
sale that counts? When I went into the life insurance business in 1953 the
Company had me stay home for a month while I studied the material they gave
me, both about what life insurance is and does, and how to sell it to happy
customers. I even made a couple of sales during that month, and was off to a
running start.
OK, now I am a believer in Christ, how do I go about the business of
introducing people to Christ? I decided that learning the whole story was
what I needed. I began to ask questions and read books and listen to
veteran believers. I studied the Bible, of course, I did what I could to
make sure I knew what I was doing. In fact, I was having so much fun doing
all of this that I could see that spending most of my time selling life
insurance was slowing down my desire to get into the soul-winning business,
as it were. So I changed jobs, even though I had been very successful at
life insurance.
I became a salesman for an oil company, traveling around the greater Los
Angeles basin area visiting gas stations, garages and other users. The best
part was that I had the time and leisure to try out all that I was learning
about talking about Christ. Since I was on commissions and not a salary, my
time was my own. I was able to try out everything. This later changed but it
was how I started.
What I did was what most Christians do not do, have a goal of learning
how to work and then practicing it until they get it down. When you know
what you are doing, and know that it is the way God has planned it, it will
happen and often.
